Magnolia Market Inspired DIY Garden Sign

in DIY/Tutorial on 04/04/17

I think it’s safe to say this post today may go down as the easiest DIY tutorial I’ve ever shared. Really, it’s true. I’m breaking all the records for simplicity with this one. Today I’m sharing my Magnolia Market inspired GARDEN sign and it’s so darn easy. I think the whole thing took maybe 30 minutes at the very most–it’s super simple, but simple is good, right? I think so. I first shared this sign a few weeks ago in my spring gallery wall and I was really surprised to see how many of you wanted to see a tutorial for it. So that’s what we’re going to do today folks! Now before I get into it, let me show you what inspired this little sign.

Magnolia Market Inspired DIY Garden Sign

I spotted this sign on our trip to Magnolia Market a few weeks ago and I was completely smitten. I really wanted to buy it, but honestly I was worried about it being so darn big. I really wasn’t sure if I’d leave a GARDEN sign out year round, so the idea of storing a sign that large for several months out of the year wasn’t so appealing. My solution was to DIY it up and make a smaller version that would be easy to store during the fall and winter months. Here’s my little creation hanging on our gallery wall:

It’s much smaller, but perfect for a gallery wall, mantel, or spring vignette. Ok, let me show you how I did it.

I picked up everything I needed for this project at Michael’s–as usual, but you can probably find these exact supplies at any craft store. I used this rectangular wood plaque (this one is 18″ x 5″) and the unfinished small wooden letters (these are about 3″ tall). I painted the letters white, just so they would pop a bit more on the sign.

I also grabbed a basic acrylic paint in black and this Martha Stewart paint in Scottish Highlands. The shade of green was a little too bright compared to the Magnolia sign, so I just mixed it with the black to darken it up. Then I painted the inside of the sign with the green/black mix and the outer edge with just the black.

Next up I used a hot glue gun to attach the letters to the plaque.

And that’s it! I told you this was insanely easy.

That’s it! So simple, easy, and cheap–the whole thing cost less than 10 bucks.  And even though it’s much smaller, I think it’s pretty darn similar to the larger one I saw at Magnolia Market. And a big bonus for me is the fact that there are so many possibilities with a smaller sign like this. I love mine on our gallery wall, but like I said it would work well on the mantel or in a little spring inspired vignette, or even on your porch. And you could always make a larger version of this if you’d like. Most craft stores sell basic wooden letters and wooden plaques of some kind, so you could easily create a bigger sign. Plus you could mix it up and use whatever paint color combination your heart desires. Heck, you could even change the word to say whatever you want too.

Okie dokie guys, that’s all for me today friends. I hope you enjoyed this quick tutorial. Let me know what you think and be sure to ask if you have any questions!

Hi Pam! I actually got that from a local shop and she appears to be all sold out of that particular light fixture. I looked around online and found the same one here if you’re interested: http://www.houzz.com/photos/53620213/Jolette-4-Light-Chandelier-Wood-farmhouse-chandeliers

Love love love your garden sign, thanks for sharing your how to. I have a Michaels 2 minutes from my home so I’m going for supplies because I am definitely making this. I’m thinking I will use a glue that can take the weather as I might just want to hang it outside, it’s always nice to have that option and not have to worry about the letters falling off.

Thank you Judi, I’m so glad you like it! And good idea about using something a bit stronger than the hot glue gun if you want to hang it outside. Not sure how mine would hold up in much weather.

HimSarah, love the smaller sign and I can see one that says Herbs in my herb garden. Getting ready to plant my herb starts next dry day we have here in Shelton, Washington.

I love your gallery wall and was wondering how you hang your spindles and items that aren’t meant for hanging. I have purchased a few items that I wanted to hang but have not figured out how yet.

Hi Sonya! For the spindles we just put two long nails into the wall, space about 4-5 inches apart and make sure they are level. Then we simply laid the spindle on top of the nails. Hope that makes sense! As for the other items, we just had to get creative with it until we figured something out that worked. For the wooden box we just nailed through the side directly into the wall and for the chicken feeder we just used the drill to make a little hole then hung it on a nail through the hole. Good luck!
