One of the things I’ve learned about myself over the years is that being creative has a calming and practically therapeutic effect on me. Sure, I have always enjoyed it, but as I get older I realize more than ever before just how much happiness it brings my little heart. Truly, if I’m having a bad day, stressed, anxious, or upset about something, one of the best things I can do for myself is to get my hands on a painting project or some kind of DIY–no matter how big or small. Something about the process just calms my mind and spirit. And it always brightens my mood. I’m guessing if you’re here, reading this, you might have the same love of DIY. Which is why I’m sharing today’s post, one of the fastest and easiest DIYs ever– vintage map wall art that will literally take you 10 minutes to do. It isn’t much, but it’s the perfect afternoon project.
So a few days ago I shared our basement tour, which included the bar area. On the far corner of the bar you may have noticed these two vintage maps on the wall. This is actually an old Colorado map I’ve had sitting around the house for years. When I was decorating this space a few weeks ago I needed something in this little corner, but I didn’t want to spend much money. So I grabbed the map and got to work. This is what I came up with!
- 11X14 canvas from any craft store
- old map
- hot glue gun
- coffee (because if this is your afternoon project it’s definitely time for more coffee)
Start off with a basic white 8×10 canvas. You can find these at any craft store, I got mine at Hobby Lobby. They are super cheap. I actually had these sitting in the garage already, just waiting to be used.
Then I grabbed my old Colorado map and laid the canvas on top to see how many I could make. I was hoping to get 3 out of the map, but it wasn’t big enough. I wanted to be able to cut the map large enough so it would wrap all the way around the canvas, so that meant I could only make two. You might be able to get three, but this will obviously depend on how big your map is.
After cutting two large sections out of the map, I simply folded it around the canvas and glued it all around the edges. We talked about this being easy, right?
Done! That was probably more like 7 minutes, but who’s counting.
That’s it! Super easy, but I really love it. We are Colorado natives, so it’s fun to have an old map showing our state in the bar area. Plus it adds to the vintage theme I have going on down here. You could also use a map of a place that is particularly special to you, like a fun spot you went on vacation or maybe a different country on a mission trip. It’s definitely a cool way to feature a location that is special to your family. On a side note, isn’t it kind of crazy how we don’t really use actual maps in life anymore? Everything is on our phone and digital. They’re kind of becoming a piece of history at this point, which makes me love this project even more. And now I want to collect all the maps! Anyway, I hope you liked this little project and maybe it can be your next afternoon DIY. I’d love to hear what you think in the comments below. And be sure to track me down on Pinterest, Facebook & Instagram. Oh I almost forgot! I’m on SnapChat now too! It’s my new obsession. Just search for lilvintagenest and you’ll find me! xoxo
